Camping and Overland safari in Africa

Overland safari

Overland Safari is arguably the ultimate way to explore Africa, here people of like minded come together to form a group and travel through major attractions in Africa. The major countries that we usually pass through include Kenya, Tanzania, Zanzibar, Namibia, Zambia, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Botswana and South African. An Overland safari would take between one and twelve weeks depending on the number of countries selected.

Major Attractions and Activities on an Overland Safari

From the long list of attractions in Africa we have singled out a few that we highly recommend for Overland safari in Africa. A wildlife game drive to the famous Masai Mara and Serengeti National park, sunbathing in one of the un-spoilt beaches of Zanzibar, climbing mount Kilimanjaro or Mount Kenya, Gorilla trekking in Uganda, sky diving and bungee jumping at the Victoria falls, Tour of the Winelands and Kruger national park in south Africa and finally White Water Rafting in Zimbabwe.

Roads and Trucks

Africa is huge and covering most major attractions on an overland safari, will require covering thousands of kilometers; some of the drives will be long and may have a few patches where the roads are rough and bumpy, and in other places after heavy rains the roads and the bridges might be swept away; this are some of the hiccups that make overland safari more adventurous if taken positively. However, we can assure you with our team of expert and you being flexible nothing will spoil your trip, because sometimes will be forced to slightly alter the itinerary to pass through the hiccups.

Due to the long and sometimes difficult conditions, our overland trucks are custom built with comfortable seats and an ample leg room. Each overland truck carries everything needed for a safari, a fully equipped kitchen that include a fridge, enough food, cutlery, pots, pans, gas stove and so on. The trucks have secure lock up facilities for your bags and a safe for your valuables, a power inverter with a 220v – 240v socket to charge the phones, cameras, laptops and so on.

An Overland safari usually has 3 crew members (a Driver, Trip Leader and a Cook), our crew has a wealth of experience traveling through this route for years and they are more than happy to share with you. In order for you to get the whole overland adventure, we usually request our guest to help in the day to day chores (help in clean ups, shopping, preparing meals and so on).

Accommodation

Accommodation while in an Overland safari can vary from bush campsites in the middle of a wilderness to fully luxurious hotels and lodges; it usually depends with the choice of the group and what is available. On a normal Overland route accommodation is usually in campsite with optional lodges on the way, a tent is usually shared by two people; they are large enough for two, with a mosquito nets over the door and window areas, a sewn in ground sheet and a separate flysheet; You will have to provide your own sleeping bag, sleeping mat and a pillow if you need one. Most of the campsites are secure and have the basic facilities (hot shower, toilet and a washing area).

Food

Our normal day meals would consist of breakfast (bread, spreads and cereals with a hot breakfast every few days); an en-route self prepared sandwich lunch with all the ingredients provided; a cooked dinner in the evening, the dinner menus would vary from curries, stews, pastas, BBQ's, down to African cuisines or any special request from the group (vegetarian, vegan or people with certain food allergies). Where fresh product is required, the menu may change due to the availability of the product in the area.
