Masai Mara National Reserve is arguably Kenya's top game reserve; located southwest of Kenya, about 270 kilometers from Nairobi (4 to 5 hours’ drive). The national reserve is about 1500 square kilometers and is sometimes said to be the most densely game-populated place on earth. Lying on the Kenya-Tanzania border, it forms part of the Serengeti ecosystem and hosts the famous annual migration from July to September.
Maasai Mara is home to the renowned black-maned lion, elephant, leopard, cheetah, buffalo, black rhino, hyena, bat-eared foxes, black-backed and side-striped jackals, hippo, crocodiles, baboons, warthog, topi, eland, Thompson’s gazelle, Grant’s gazelle, impala, water-buck, oribi, reed-buck, zebra and over 450 bird species.
Masai Mara is home to thousands of wildlife that include the mighty annual migration, all the Big Five and over 450 bird species. Other attractions include the hot air balloon safari flights, guided nature walks, cultural visit to the local Maasai people and the beautiful Rift Valley landscapes. It’s a great place for families, group of friends and individuals.

The best time to spot most wildlife is on the dry season, animal are easily spotted on the open plains and near rivers or water holes in search of food and water. In Kenya the dry season are between January-March and July-October, this is the best time to spot wildlife. April, May and November are considered to be shoulder season with lesser wildlife compared to the high season. Bird’s watching is best in October - December.
Note: - in order to exhaust all opportunity to view most wildlife, it is advised to spend at least three days at Masai Mara. For photographers, the longer you stay the more chances are of getting the ultimate shot.
Masai Mara is about 270 km from Nairobi and it takes about 5-6 hours by road or a 40-45 minutes flight. Most parts of the road are okay except a section from Narok to Mara which is dirt/Murram road, there are daily scheduled flights from Wilson Airport to Masai Mara.
