About Mount Kilimanjaro

Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa and the highest free standing mountain in the world, located in Moshi near Arusha town in northern Tanzania. It’s a large stratovolcano composed of three distinct volcanic cones, which are; Kibo with the highest summit (Uhuru Peak at 5895m), followed by Mawenzi at 5,149 and Shira at 4,005m. Mawenzi and Shira are extinct volcano, while Kibo is dormant and could erupt again; the last major eruption at mount Kilimanjaro occurred about 150,000 to 200,000 years ago.

Mount Kilimanjaro has several distinct vegetation zones within different altitudes; it begins with a lush montane forest and grassland, to moorland zone, to dry and arid areas, and gradually to the glacier and the snore-peaks. Kilimanjaro is one of the world's most accessible high summits, a beacon for visitors from around the world; it was first climbed in 1889 by German geographer Hans Meyer and Austrian mountain climber Ludwig Purtscheller. Since then the mountain has become a tourist’s destination with thousands of climbers every year.

Mount Kilimanjaro is part of Mount Kilimanjaro national park and attracts thousands of mountain climbing enthusiasts every year; either on mountain climbing, hiking, nature walks or on site seeing and wildlife watching tour. Major wildlife within the park includes elephants, leopards, buffaloes, the endangered Abbot’s duiker, giant heather, lobelias and other small antelope and primates among many others.
