Mombasa is the second largest city in Kenya, located along the coastline, south of Kenya. It’s a major tourist destination and also the main commercial and cultural center in the region. The culture and history of Mombasa is remarkable and unique, here you would find people of all ethnic backgrounds and religions.
The long history of Mombasa can be traced back on the 16th century’s writings; many ancient traders that visited the region loved the place and attempted to enforce their governance on the town due to its advantageously central location. Mombasa began as an ivory and slaves trading center for the Arabs between the 8th and 16th Century, then the Portuguese took control of the city until 1698 when the Omani Arabs took over, followed by the al-Mazru'I and finally the British in 1895.
Mombasa is a cosmopolitan city with four main administrative blocks that are clearly defined geographically, this are. Mvita; it’s an island situated central of Mombasa, with the old town and the main city center, major administrative blocks, hospitals and attractions. Changamwe; it’s the main entry point to Mombasa from Nairobi, a main land situated north west of Mombasa and connects to Mvita via Makupa Bridge; here you will find, Moi international airport, part of the port and some oil and chemical industry plants. Kisauni; it’s a main land situated north of Mombasa and is connected to Mombasa Island (Mvita) by Nyali Bridge; here you will find luxury beach hotels along the Nyali, Bamburi and Shanzu beach. Likoni, often called south coast, its situated south of Mombasa and is connected to Mombasa (Mvita) by a ferry; the area has a beautiful stretch of white sandy beaches and luxury beach hotels.
