About Lake Magadi and Safari holidays

Lake Magadi

Lake Magadi is a saline, alkaline lake, located along the Great Rift Valley in southern Kenya near the Namanga – Tanzania border, northeast of Lake Natron. The lake is approximately 100 square kilometers in size and 80% of the lake is covered by soda water, which evaporates exposing a vast pan of trona, hydrated sodium bicarbonate carbonate; the trona is then mined and purified to form soda ash (sodium carbonate), is used in manufacturing glass, fabric dyeing and paper production.

At an altitude of 580m, Magadi is the second-lowest lake and has the most alkaline among all the Rift Valley lakes. As you approach the lake, the views are splendid; as the light reflects on the shallow soda water and the pink flamingos, it reflects back some beautiful colors that changes from brilliant white to cerise pink, indigo, deep scarlet and soft pastels; depending with the light ‘s angle, the soda water level and birds.

Besides the pink flamingoes, Magadi is also home to over 150 migration bird species and a few wildlife that include  zebras, giraffes and antelopes. The stunning shoreline on the lake, attracts film makers and was used to film The Constant Gardener, instead of its original Lake Turkana as based on John le Carre's novel.
