Lake Naivasha is a beautiful freshwater lake located along the Great Rift Valley, North West of Nairobi. The lake is at the highest point on the Kenyan rift, set on an altitude of 1,884 meters above the sea level, a surface area between 140 to 180 km² depending on the rainfall and an average depth of 6 m (the area around Crescent Island is the deepest with a maximum depth of about 30 meters).
The name Naivasha was derived from a Maasai name Nai'posha which was mispronounced by the British colonials to Naivasha; Nai’posha means "rough water" from the sudden storms on the lake. The Lake is fed from transient streams, the perennial Malewa and a few rivers from Gilgil. And although there are no visible outlets, because it’s a fresh water lake; it is believed to have an underground outflow through the volcanic fissure to the south.
Being a freshwater lake, the lake is home to a healthy number of fish populations that includes Tilapias, Black bass and Crayfish that attracts a few fish eating birds to the Lake. Much of the lake is surrounded by Acacia forest and swamps that attracts a few wild animals that include Giraffe that wanders across the acacia trees, Buffaloes, Columbus monkeys that are seen on the treetops, large hippos seen on the shallow ends of the lake and over 400 different bird species.
