Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro

This is a 7 days Mount Kilimanjaro Umbwe route climbing package, the packages include one day acclimatization, five days climbing and descending, and one last night rest at Moshi town. Umbwe route is said to be the most difficult route and with the most fascinating views; a great route for the skilled and well fit mountain climbers.

Summary

This is the most difficult route, it has very steep and slippery section; It require physically fit and skilled people. This route takes you through major rainforest, scenic ridge with striking view of the huge Baranco valley. The route joins with Machame and Lemosho route at Baranco camp which sometime can be crowded. Ascension to the summit will start at midnight from Barafu, getting to the highest point in time for the sunrise; capture the stunning sunrise view from the summit, then descend via Mweka route. This route although is said to be the most difficult route, it has the most fascinating views as well.

Day 1, Acclimatization Day

On this day, you will be received at Kilimanjaro airport or on an agreed venue in Arusha, briefed about the climb, then driven to Kilimanjaro Mountain Resort; here you will spend the rest of the day acclimatizing and preparing for the five days climb.

Kilimanjaro Mountain Resort is located at Marangu village southeast of Mount Kilimanjaro, a five story hotel, set within a farming region at the base of Mount Kilimanjaro near the Rongai gate; a good place for acclimatization and rest before hiking Kilimanjaro.

Day 2, Climb to Umbwe Cave (2950m)

On this day after breakfast, you will be driven to Umbwe gate (1800m), then will start hiking through the narrow ridge crest between the Lonzo River to the west and the Umbwe River to the east, continues through the dense forest up the steep sections and scramble rocks to Umbwe caves where you will spend the rest of the day; relaxing and preparing for next day hike. This day’s hike will take about 5 to 6 hours to get to Umbwe Cave, which is about 2,940m high.

Day 3, Umbwe Cave to Barranco (3900m)

On this day will have an early breakfast, then continue with the hike through the steep and scramble rock across the rainforest and moorland, up the hill to Barranco. This section has superb views of the Western Breech Wall, the Valley and the Great Barranco Wall. Barranco is situated at 3900m high; this day’s hike will be about 6 – 7 hours hike.

Day 4, Acclimatization Day

On this day, will have a resting day to acclimatize; you may spend your time at the camp relaxing and enjoying the stunning views or explore the small hills around. The acclimatization day is very important as it increases your chances of reaching the summit.

Day 5, Barranco to Karanga (4100m)

On this day after breakfast, will start by hiking up the Barranco Wall; a 500ft lava flow, it’s challenging but not so technical. Once on top of the "wall", the climb becomes easier and extremely beautiful with fantastic views of the crags and crevasses of the jagged peaks of Kibo on your left. Lastly we descend into the Karanga Valley then up to the camp; this day’s Hike will be about 3 to 4 hours.

Day 6, Karanga to Barafu & the Summit (4,800m)

On this day, will leave the camp at midnight, begin by hiking up and down the slopes, hills and rocky areas to Barafu; Barafu means "ice" in Swahili, it is an extremely windy and cold section. At this point, everyone is excited and anticipating of the toughest summit climb ahead. Then continue up to the peak of Mawenzi, painted with colors of the African sun, slowly up over the rocky outcrops to the top of the rim before the sunrise; here you will have the opportunity to capture the stunning sunrise view, the scenic beauty beneath the mountain and the snow-capped peak.
After that you will descent through Barafu, where will have a brief rest for lunch, then continue to Mweka Camp at about 2800m.

Day 7, Mweka Camp to Moshi

On this morning after breakfast, you will continue descending for 3-4 hour to the gate, where the tour vehicle will meet you and drive you to Kilimanjaro Mountain Resort; here you will be handed over your climbing certificate, freshen up, have lunch and a brief rest before being transferred to the airport for your evening flight.
