About Dar Es Salaam

Dar Es Salaam is the largest city and main political, social and economic hub of Tanzania; located along the Indian Ocean, south of Tanzania. Dar Es Salaam is an Arabic word translated to as ‘Home of Peace', it was first established in 1860’s. It’s the capital of Dar es Salaam region with three administrative districts; northern Kinondoni, central Ilala, and southern Temeke. It has a population of about 4.7 million people living within the city and on its suburbs.

Dar es Salaam initially was a coastal fishing village before Sultan Majid bin Said of Zanzibar invaded the area and began building the city and named it Dar es Salaam, upon the death of Sultan Majid in 1870, the city’s growth declined until 1887 when the German East Africa Company established a regional station and resulting to rapid growth, expansion of industries, commercial centers and building a new railway line.

During the First World War, the British took over Dar Es Salaam and the entire Tanganyika region and appointed Dar es Salaam as the administrative center of Tanganyika. Dar es Salaam remained as the capital city even after the independence (in 1961) and the merging of Tanganyika and Zanzibar to form the United Republic Tanzania (in 1964); however in 1974, the Tanzanian government resolved to move the capital city to a more central location and it was moved to Dodoma.

Airports and Getting around

Dar es Salaam is served by Julius Nyerere International Airport (JNIA), it is used for domestic, chartered and international flights; the airports is just 12 Km to the city center.

Getting around Dar es Salaam; there are various public Buses, Shuttles, Taxis, private car hire and rentals. The public transports are all over the town, including the Airports, the town center and on its suburbs. The fares vary with the location, time of the day, duration and distance; the fares could be anything from $ 0.50 to 10.
