Hell's Gate National Park is a unique national park located south of Lake Naivasha, it’s a small park with an area of 68 Km2, established in 1984; the park was named after one of its narrow cliffs and it mainly comprises of savannah grassland, the hells gate gorge, hot springs, stunning cliffs and natural towers.
The park is home to over 103 bird species, Buffalo, zebra, eland, hartebeest, Thomson’s gazelle and giraffe, baboons, serval cat, klipspringer antelopes and Chanler's mountain reedbuck. It is also home to three geothermal power stations at Olkaria and a Masai Cultural Center.
Major activities at Hell's Gate National Park would include; wildlife watching, nature walk to the cliffs and gorge, hiking and Rock climbing, bird watching, biking, photography and educational tour to the hot springs and the Olkaria Geothermal Station.
There are no hotels and Lodges within Hell's Gate National Park, only camping sites for the traditional camping. Alternative accommodation can be found a kilometer away along Lake Naivasha or in Naivasha town.
The three main campsites that include the Oldubai campsite (at the cliff top, south of Fischer’s Tower), the Nairburta campsite and the Endchata campsite (across the gorge at the northern cliffs).
The best time to tour Hell's Gate national park is on the dry season; in Kenya the dry season are between January-March and July-October, this is the best time for outdoor activities and wildlife watching. April, May and November are considered to be shoulder season with lesser wildlife compared to the high season. Bird’s watching is best in October - December.
Hell's Gate National Park is about 90Km from Nairobi and 10Km from Naivasha town, just off Moi south road and on Gorge road via Elsa and Olkaria gates. By air, it can be accessed via Naivasha airstrip.
