Lake Nakuru National park is a beautiful park, with a shallow alkaline concentrate Lake that attracts millions of pink flamingos, pelicans, water-bucks and over 400 other bird species. Lake Nakuru National Park is situated approximately 160 kilometers from Nairobi along the Great Rift Valley; the park comprises of a lake surrounded by wooded and bushy grasslands; its main attractions are the pink Flamingos, pelicans, waterbucks and over 400 other bird species.
The park has more than just birds; it’s a major National Park with an important sanctuary for both Black and White Rhinos that are often seen resting under acacias trees. Other game animals include zebra, buffalo, Rothschild Giraffe, gazelle, the long-eared leaf-nosed bat, Columbus monkey, rock hyrax, hippo, leopard, lion, striped hyena, bat-eared fox, wildcat, reedbuck, golden cat and many more.
Lake Nakuru is the only place that gives photographers, breath taking shots of Rhinos, Giraffes or a Buffaloes just next to the Lake with a great background of 1000’s of pink flamingos, pelicans and water-bucks feeding on the alkaline.
Lake Nakuru is home to over 450 bird species that include; thousands of Flamingos (Greater and Lesser), pelicans and many other water birds. Over 56 different Mammal species; that includes the white rhinos, waterbuck, buffaloes and a Rhino sanctuary. Over 550 different plant species that includes; the unique and biggest euphorbia forest in Africa, the yellow acacia woodlands, stunning view points, cliffs, hills and water falls.

The best time to spot most wildlife is on the dry season, animal are easily spotted on the open areas and near the Lake in search of food and water. In Kenya the dry season are between January-March and July-October, this is the best time to spot wildlife. April, May and November are considered to be shoulder season with lesser wildlife compared to the high season. Bird’s watching is best in October - December.
The road from Nairobi to Lake Nakuru is tarmacked and is in good condition, it’s about 156 Km from Nairobi and 4 Km from Nakuru town center. The park has three gates; the Main Gate and Lanet Gate that link the park with the Nairobi - Nakuru highway, and the less used Nderit Gate. By air, the park can be accessed through the Naishi airstrip.
