Lake Manyara

Lake Manyara is a beautiful lake located in northern Tanzania near Arusha town, the lake is part of Lake Manyara national park and it’s a bit different from the nearby Serengeti, Tarangire national park and Ngorongoro Crater; it has beautiful landscapes surrounding the Lake, large number of bird species and home to the tree climbing lions. A great place to include on your northern wildlife safari circuit.

About Lake Manyara

Lake Manyara national park is located beneath the cliffs of the Manyara Escarpment, on the edge of the Great Rift Valley and has a surface area of about 330Km2; it offers varied ecosystems, incredible bird life, and breathtaking views. It is situated on the way to Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti national reserve.  The various ecosystems at Lake Manyara national park include ground water forests, bush plains, baobab-strewn cliffs, algae-streaked and an incredible alkaline lake.

The Lake is the main attraction in Lake Manyara National park; it’s an alkaline water lake situated about 126 Km west of Arusha Town, the name ‘Manyara’ come from a Masai word (emanyara) which was a description of the  Euphorbia Tirucalli plant found near the Lake.

Lake Manyara national park is famous for the large number of baboons, the unique tree climbing lions, over 400 bird species, hippos, impalas, elephants, wildebeests, buffalo, warthogs, Leopards, giraffes and many others.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to spot most wildlife at Lake Manyara national park is on the dry season; animal are easily spotted near the Lake or on water holes in search of food and water. In Tanzania the dry season are between January-March and July-October, this is the best time to spot wildlife. April, May and November are considered to be shoulder season with lesser wildlife compared to the high season. Bird’s watching is best in October - February.

Getting there

Lake Manyara national park is about 126km from Arusha Town, it takes about 2½ hours by road or a 25 minutes flight from Arusha or Serengeti national reserve. There are daily scheduled/chartered flights from Arusha and Serengeti to Lake Manyara national park.
